armies and to take possession of Warsaw. Developing approach, the forces of
Western Front on 12 August have fastened fights on approaches to Warsaw. However,
because of underestimation of the opponent, weariness of armies and lack of forces
(about 60 thousand man against 110 thousand), absence of interaction with
Southwestern Front, was finished by a withdrawal of the Soviet armies from
Warsaw on a boundary Lipsk, Svisloch, 15 kms to the east of Brests - Litovsk.
Tuhachevskiy
began the Warsaw operation sure in its success, and beginnings it so prompt, that the rears have lagged behind. The
forces have carried
the large losses, the movement was suspended. To capture Warsaw there were
no forces. Tuchachevskiy has put
a question to strengthening of the left flank and moved
here the First Cavalry Army. August 5, 1920 the Central Committee has ratified the
decision to transfer to Western Front 12th and 1st Cavalry Army from Southwestern
Front. The directive was immediately sent to Commander
of Southwestern Front Yegorov.
But, as it became known
later, Stalin forbided of this directive.
From Southwestern Front to the High Commander have answered, that
the specified forces, and 1st Cavalry Army is especial, carries out the put task
to capturing of Lvov and Rava-Russkaya cities, are involved in fights, and the
directive on their transfer cannot be executed. Only on August 13, 1st Cavalry
Army,
not having taken Lvov city and having carried the large losses, began
to rearrange on the Warsaw direction, but the time was missed. Pilsudskiy meantime, having concentrated up to twenty Polish division, has put most
powerful impact on the Tuhachevskiy
forces. Carried in fights the large losses and not having of reinforcements,
they have not sustained impact in flank of fresh Polish troops and
have begun a universal withdrawal. The forces of 4th Army of Tuhachevskiy
were cut off and were compelled to make the way on territory of East Prussia,
where were intern.
Same happened and with two divisions
of 15th Army and 3rd Cavalry Corps under Gay's Commander .
